Non-Fiction Section Poll

We're trying to get a feel for how many libraries in the system have their own separate YA non-fiction section and how many integrate their YA NF with Adult non-fiction-- Also, does anyone have fiction only YA sections?

On the occasion of Children's Book Week—November 13-19, 2006, we will acknowledge and celebrate the Westchester writers and artists who create books for children and teens. 

Youth Services is hosting a special breakfast and program on Tuesday, November 14th at the Scarsdale Library.  We have invited Westchester authors and illustrators, who have published books for children and/or teens in 2005 and 2006, to be part of a group photo in support of Westchester libraries and reading. We will be creating a poster from this photo and each library will receive one.

In addition, we have created a brochure, featuring these authors, their books and promoting reading—which will be available at the meeting.

Trev Jones, Book Review Editor of School Library Journal, will be our guest speaker.

It promises to be a memorable morning!  Come out and meet, schmooze and support our Westchester authors & illustrators.

Why We Read: A Report of reading habits and preferences of Westchester Teens

15 teens from the Westchester Scholars Program studied the reading habits and preferences of Westchester youth. Working with journalist Jill Nelson, the scholars conducted dozens of interviews. Their report offers insights about teens and their reading preferences. The report also provides recommendations for making libraries more teen-friendly.  The full report is available.

Why We Read: Research on Reading Habits and Preferences of Westchester Teens

n the summer of 2006, Outreach Services collaborated with 15 members of the Westchester Scholars Program to study reading habits and preferences of Westchester youth. The scholars worked with journalist Jill Nelson to conduct dozens of interviews. Several of the scholars will share the results of their efforts, and Ms. Nelson will provide some insights about how to use this valuable research to implement new initiatives in libraries, schools and at home. Teens from Ossining’s Communities That Care program will then discuss other supports that teens need to succeed. The Program—Why We Read: Research on Reading Habits and Preferences of Westchester Teens will be held on October 5, 2006 at Yonkers Public Library – Riverfront at 4:00 PM.
